Lawn Seeding

The Transition Zone

Tall Fescue

Bermuda

Zoysia

In Southwest Missouri we live in what’s called the Transition Zone for grass.  This means it is difficult to grow one type of grass well, simply because we get the extreme heat of the summer and the harsh cold temperatures in winter.  Cool season grass, such as Tall Fescue, thrives best in the cooler temperatures while warm season grass, such as Bermudagrass and Zoysia, thrives in the warmer weather.  Because of this, we consider your lawns location in regards to sun, shade, and soil type.

A picture of the United States showing that cool season grasses grow best in the northern regions while warm season grasses grow best in the southern regions. There is an area between the two regions that is considered the transition zone where both warm season grass and cool season grass can grow but neither thrive in this zone.

This lawn was initially planted by the builders of the house after construction was completed. Often times, building contractors use a seed that is designed to grow grass fast to prevent erosion and loss of soil. This grass seed usually has many weeds mixed in and it dies during the heat of summer. We restored this lawn by killing it and starting over, planting a turf-type tall fescue designed to thrive in the transition zone.

More About Seeding

Whether a lawn needs established, renovated, or thickened- following these principles will ensure success when planting grass seed.

  • Plant grass seed at appropriate times (September 1st through October 15th for cool-season turf).
  • Ensure good seed to soil contact through one or more of the following processes: aeration, dethatching, dragging, and/or rolling.
  • Use a starter fertilizer at time of seeding (insure that the fertilizer is low in nitrogen)
  • Keep soil moist until grass is established. Tass Fescue germinates 10-14 days when weather conditions are optimal.  Ease into less frequent but deeper watering as grass establishes.
  • Mow the grass when it reaches 3″ tall.  Mow as needed, never taking off more than 1/3 of the grass blade at the time of each cut.
Seeding is often done in conjunction with core aeration.
